WHILE CPAP IS THE MOST WIDELY-USED THERAPY, OTHER OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE
DENTAL DEVICES
In addition to CPAP treatment, another device a Sleep Physician specialists may recommend is a special mouthguard – a Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS).
It works by pushing your lower jaw forward during sleep. This device is generally custom-made and fitted by a specialist dentist. When properly made, it can be effective for mild-to-moderate Sleep Apnea.
SURGERY
Surgery for Sleep Apnea, although not always effective, may be an option for some patients when other treatments do not work.
The typical surgical intervention is called a Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). It may include the removal of tonsils, adenoids, uvula and other soft issues in an attempt to reshape the throat and is usually performed by an Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) surgeon.
As with any surgery, these types of surgeries carry the risk of complications and infections.
This is not a common treatment option nowadays as advancements in other non-invasive treatments options are often preferred to than surgical options.
